The ceremony takes place in the Sahara wedding chapel.

French defeat at Dienbienphu
On May 7, after a two-month siege by Viet Minh troops, the French garrison in Dienbienphu village falls, and its 10,000 defenders are captured.
This defeat will sign the end of French dominion over the region. Vietnam will become independent, and will be split in two parts, with the northern one under control of Communists.
The war between France and Vietnam has lasted eight years, and has costed about 100,000 casualties among French troops, and 1.3 millions among Vietnamese's (of which one million civilians).

The policy of ''massive retaliation''
In January, the U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles introduces the idea of ''massive retaliation'', as a deterrent against enemies.
In case of even minor attacks against United States, Dulles' plan prescribes that a massive and instantaneous retaliation must follow, using also nuclear weapons.

The first nuclear submarine
The first nuclear-powered submarine is built in New London, Connecticut, and will be inaugurated in January 1955. It is much bigger and faster than previous submarines.
It is named Nautilus, like Captain's Nemo submergible, as narrated by Jules Verne in its novel ''Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea''.
What makes this craft unique is that a nuclear reactor powers it. Unlike traditional engines, its fuel can last years, and no air is needed to function.

The Lord of the Rings
J.R.R. Tolkien, an Oxford professor of medieval literatures, publishes the first book of ''The Lord of the Rings'' trilogy: ''The Fellowship of the Ring''.
Talking of fantastic stories about wizards, dragons, gnomes, elves, hobbits, Tolkien creates from scratch a mythology. This book will have a great success, and will sell millions of copies in the next decade.
