THIS YEAR IN LAS VEGAS ...

WHILE IN THE WORLD ...

Towards the World Series of Poker
The gambler ''Nick the Greek'' Dandolas convinces Benny Binion to organize a marathon poker match between him and the famous player Johnny Moss.
The match will last 5 months, and at the end Johnny Moss will win 2 million dollars.
About 20 years after, the World Series of Poker will be instituted in the memory of this legendary event.

A big star in the Little Church
On April 1, in the Little Church of the West the movie star Zsa Zsa Gabor (born Sari Gabor) celebrates her third wedding, with George Sanders.
Sanders will stay married with Zsa Zsa until 1954.

A new owner for the ''Review-Journal''
Donald W. Reynolds buys the ''Review-Journal'' from Sherwin (''Scoop'') Garside.
A.E. ''Al'' Cahlan will become the general manager of this newspaper.

Europe is divided in two pieces
On April 4, twelve Western countries sign the birth of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), formally a defense alliance against the Communist bloc.
On May 24, right in this Cold War scenario, a fusion of the West-controlled territories gives rise to the Federal Republic of Germany, whose first chancellor is Adenauer.
In the Soviet-controlled zone, instead, a Congress is formed after a piloted election and, on October 7, it declares the birth of the German Democratic Republic.

The People's Republic of China
On October 1, from the Gate of Heavenly Peace, of the Beijing's imperial palace, Mao Zedong declares the birth of the People's Republic of China.
During this year, the Communist Army has occupied most Chinese cities, obliging Chiang Kai-shek to move to Taiwan his Nationalist government.
In December, Mao meets Stalin in Moscow. He will receive a limited support from U.S.S.R. In turn, he will have to abandon the idea to annex Mongolia to China.

The Republic of Ireland
On April 18, the independent Republic of Ireland is proclaimed. It gathers 26 counties of Ireland, while six counties with a Protestant majority remain to Britain.
Step after step, Ireland had moved away from the control of the United Kingdom. In 1937, Prime Minister De Valera abolished the oath of allegiance to Britain.
Ireland however was still a member of the British Commonwealth, when in 1948 the Irish Parliament voted a complete independence, effective from 1949.

The Quantum Electrodynamics
The American physicist Richard Feynman initiates the quantum electrodynamics, a new branch of quantum mechanics specific for particle interactions.
He also finds an effective way to simplify calculations, by introducing the Feynman integrals and the related ''Feynman diagrams''.
The Feynman diagrams, mimicking the motions of the interacting particles, also render more intuitive the physics behind these complicate calculations.
