THIS YEAR IN LAS VEGAS ...

WHILE IN THE WORLD ...

Investors from the Old Continent
Mayor Peter Buol, coming back from a journey to Scotland, announces that Scottish investors are strongly interested in the development of Las Vegas. But this project will stop at the beginning of World War I.

The second Las Vegas mayor
Peter Buol ends his term this year, and from May the new mayor is Bill Hawkins. Buol's new home is at North Seventh Street and Ogden Avenue.

First Ford's assembly line
For his famous Model T, Henry Ford introduces the concept of the assembly line. Each worker repeats uninterruptedly a specific task, while a belt carrying the pieces under construction never stops.
An excellent idea to improve productivity; but also a nightmare for the workers.

The quantum theory of the atom
The physicist Niels Bohr publishes the quantum theory of the structure of atoms.
The previous classical model of the atom, as a sort of miniaturized solar system, could neither explain the atom stability, nor account for well defined frequencies in the emitted/absorbed light.
He assumed that the electrons in an atom can emit/absorb energy of well defined quantities, called ''quanta'', by jumping from an orbit to another. He will get the Nobel Prize in 1922 for this discovery.

The ''Remembrance of Things Past''
The French writer Marcel Proust publishes the first volume of his masterpiece ''A la recherche du temps perdu'' (for a total of 7 volumes, and about 3,000 pages).
A chronic asthma obliged him, still young, to end with his brilliant life and to stay recluse.
He then undertakes a deep introspective work, in the remembrance of past, starting from his childhood. His genius will be recognized only after his death.

Schweitzer opens his hospital
The German doctor Albert Schweitzer opens his hospital in Lambaréné (French Equatorial Africa), where he will spend the rest of his life curing endemic diseases like malaria, leprosy, syphilis.
For his work he will receive in 1952 the Nobel Peace Prize.
