THIS YEAR IN LAS VEGAS ...

WHILE IN THE WORLD ...

Las Vegas gets over its first troubles.
The 50-ton capacity ice house of Las Vegas is destroyed by fire, leaving in trouble saloons, restaurants, and hotels. It will be soon replaced by a new Armour Ice Plant. Las Vegas survives the 'Panic of 1907', started in New York on October 22nd.
A 90-horsepower engine, called 'Old Betsy', supplies the power for the first lighting of Fremont Street. The Las Vegas and Tonopah Railroad, connecting to the silver districts northwest of Las Vegas, is completed.

Plans to make Las Vegas plenty of water
Until now water was supplied only to Main, Clark and Fremont street from the railroad, through a network of redwood pipes. Peter Buol (future Las Vegas mayor) succeeds gathering people and funds, and forms the 'Vegas Artesian Water Syndicate',
intended to provide the town with water by drilling artesian wells, the first of which is also drilled this year.

The 'Panic of 1907'
The 'Panic of 1907' starts when, after a rapid decrease in the price of copper, some banks are suspected to go bankrupt. The worst case is that of the Knickerbocker Trust Company: its clients rush to withdraw all their money,
depleting the bank of cash, and obliging the management to suspend payments.
This critical situation is rapidly extending to other New York banks, and only a firm action of a group of bankers, together with that of the President Roosevelt, will save the economy of United States.

Henri Bergson
The French philosopher Henri Bergson introduces, in his book 'Creative Evolution', the principle of the 'élan vital' (i.e. life force).
In this way he indicates the inadequacy of pure mechanistic explanations of the life, and suggests instead a more spiritualistic, and even religious, approach.

Lusitania
The magnificent liner Lusitania is launched in September, and its sister ship Mauretania just two months later. They are soon competing for the speed record on the crossing of the Atlantic.

Pablo Picasso invents the 'Cubism'
Pablo Picasso, painting his famous 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon', invents the style later on called 'Cubism'. These 'demoiselles' are in fact a gourp of prostitutes of Avignon Street, in Barcelona.
